Six Essential Storage Management Tools for End User Organizations

One of my roles at Overland Storage is to comment on critical business, technology and product trends using my 30 years of experience in the information technology industry both from the vendor side and the end user side. I hope my comments will spark some vigorous conversations about the issues I plan discuss in future blogs.

Today I am going to touch upon six future trends that I believe will generate a great deal of the spending corporations make on IT infrastructure projects. A significant driver of spending for corporations is the ever increasing dependence on continuous data access to power their business, their joint ventures and to uncover market opportunities. This need will in turn increase the demand for even a more resilient storage infrastructure than ever before.  In addition, IT must determine how to align their strategies and spending when so many of the requirements are often not clearly defined, and up-time for applications are being measured in seconds.

From my vantage point, the best foundation for meeting corporate requirements is to examine and adopt mutually reinforcing business and technical initiatives. They each play a unique role in delivering the vital mission of continuous data access. First, to truly embrace the user experience you must judge how well systems and applications are successfully delivering data. User experience is vital since the proliferation of consumer devices demands that data should be easily accessible, anytime and anywhere. Second, take advantage of specialized operating systems for enhancing the integration of hardware, software and practice. Third, investigate the contribution storage clustering can make to reducing overhead and complexity, as well as aggregating resources to more easily manage exploding data growth. Fourth, fund experiments and proof of concepts based on fast networking. The difference is to aim those projects at solving the problem of delivering better access, as well as unifying data into scalable data repositories. Fifth, seriously investigate and deploy more instances of global namespace to enable common storage repository. Finally, leverage smart devices to manage the infrastructure and to give information users the most productive forum for finding and extracting valuable data insights.
