Archiving

What is Archiving?

An archive is a collection of records that have been created during the course of an organization's life and have been selected for permanent or long-term preservation.  Typically, archived data is accessed infrequently, and its content does not change.

Why do you need it?

Companies need to keep long-term copies of their data for a variety of reasons, including to aid in disaster recovery and compliance archiving to meet government regulations. For some businesses, file management and document archiving are only necessary for augmenting backup and recovery systems.

IT managers may see archiving as merely a storage process, but a good archiving strategy can reduce the overall cost of storing data and adapt to the expansion of the content a growing organization produces.

What are the difficulties?

Compliance archiving and long-term file management document archiving require a clear, behind-the-scenes data management strategy to maintain data access without incurring unreasonable costs. Reliability, speed, and easy access to the archived data are essential.
